Fun with French

Across year groups, discussions, books, and interactive experiences has grown a strong appreciation for languages and cultures within the classroom.

The Variety in Our Groups - Reception

In Reception, students have explored what makes them special and celebrated their differences. They discussed how people around the world have different hair, skin tones, languages, and accents. In class, students have been exposed to books that reinforced these concepts. They also shared the languages they speak at home and began learning greetings in each other’s languages, encouraging an inclusive and welcoming environment.

France vs England - Year 1

Year 1 have explored their language learning through cross curricular opportunities in the classroom. They began by looking at different countries around the world that spoke French and the differences in culture between England and France. The children have been learning greetings, numbers and colours in French. They have had chances in class to converse to one another in French so that they have that opportunity to use what they have learnt. In class, the children are engaged and excited with their knowledge of a different language, as well as showing renewed confidence. The children are competitive during learning time and this shows their levels of engagement in languages.

Building on Our French Vocabulary - Year 3

Last term, Year 3 were using their knowledge of vocabulary in French to build their conversational skills both in speaking and then developing this into a written piece. The clear sequence of learning within the lessons mean that all children are able to engage and build on their previous learning. They begin with oral speaking practise with their peers on the carpet which leads  onto group table vocabulary learning and discussion. The children were then confident to use the skills they had learnt to develop their writing- first as single words and then in their sentence writing. This  term they will be learning Spanish!

Expanding Our French Further - Year 6

In Year 6, students have made great progress in French, expanding their knowledge of numbers up to 100, months, days, and family members. They began the term with teacher-created resources, including a translated version of The Hungry Caterpillar, which helped them learn the days of the week in an engaging way and introduced new vocabulary through a familiar story. James Wolfe have also enhanced students learning by using Rigolo app. This has been a valuable tool in reinforcing vocabulary and comprehension.
